Off Grid Living

Solar Power For The Home

If you're thinking of going off-grid and being able to run your own home from renewable energy sources then you have come to the right place. We have designed a number of complete stand-alone energy systems to cater for the needs of the individual or family. The systems we offer may include a mixture of electrical generating sources combining wind and solar power energy sources. There are various options to suit all requirements and include:

  • Solar PV modules
  • wind turbines
  • small hydroelectric generators
  • diesel or petrol generators
  • hybrid systems comprising of two or more of those mentioned above.

The packages we have put together cater for all needs. There are four different types of systems to meet the varying power requirements.

TYPICAL SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS FOR OFF GRID HOMES

Package 1: Off Grid Weekender Package

Package 2: Off Grid Cottage Package

This package is a basic system designed for those who have small and occasional power demands.

Package comprises:

  • 600 watts of solar modules
    (e.g, 3 x 200W Solar panels)
  • Mounting frames for solar modules (ground, roof or pole mounting).
  • 45A solar regulator or smaller
  • 600Ah, 12V/24V DC battery bank
  • 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter

This package is a basic system designed for those who have small and occasional power demands.

Package comprises:

  • 1000 watts of solar modules
    (5 x 200W solar panels)
  • Mounting frames for solar modules (ground or roof mount)
  • 45A solar regulator
  • 1000Ah, 12V/24V DC battery bank
  • 1500 watt pure sine wave inverter
Package 3: Off Grid Medium Package Package 4: Off Grid Large Family Package

This package is a basic system designed for those who have small and occasional power demands.

Package comprises

  • 2kW of solar modules (10 x 200W solar panels)
  • Mounting kit for Solar Panels (ground or roof mounting)
  • 80 amp solar regulator
  • 1400Ah Battery Bank
  • 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter

This package is a basic system designed for those who have small and occasional power demands.

Package comprises:

  • 4,000 watts of solar modules (20 x 200W solar panels)
  • Mounting frames for solar modules (ground or roof mounting)
  • 80 amp solar regulator
  • 2000Ah, 48VDC battery bank
  • 3500 watt pure sine wave inverter

PLEASE NOTE: IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOUR HOME IS PROPERLY INSULATED AND THAT ALL
APPLIANCES AND LIGHTS USED ARE ENERGY EFFICIENT WITH AN "A" STAR RATING.

If we take package 3 - Medium Energy Package, it will be able to run all of the appliances listed below. Naturally, it cannot run them all at the same time!

  • low power lighting
  • stereo, tuner, CD and DVD player
  • small fridge
  • TV and VCR
  • computer, printer, and scanner
  • kettle
  • various power tools
  • microwave oven
  • toaster
  • vacuum cleaner

Remote power systems are ideal for providing energy to rural properties, holiday homes, alternative power systems and small community power supplies. If you live in an area where there is no electricity and connecting to the electricity grid is not an option, most likely it is far too expensive! The UK is unusual in that it experiences good wind conditions so wind power is certainly viable. Coupled with sunshine, a solar and wind solution provides a reliable, safe, environmentally friendly and user-friendly source of electricity for a very long time. A solar and./or wind power solution will need little maintenance simply because there are no moving parts. Component failure is very rare and come with superb guarantees, solar panels offer a 25 year warranty as standard. Best of all, you are generating your own electricity for free!

A customised system has a lot of options and we can offer a wide range of products to suit all requirements. These include:

We offer a customised design service and are able to design a system that meets your exact needs. Everything we do is ecological responsible and sustainable. We offer complete, efficient, cost effective, and environmental systems.

Before we can design a system for your own off-grid home there are six essential steps to be taken. The steps are:

  • 1. Estimating the Load
  • 2. Sizing and Specifying the Battery Storage
  • 3. Sizing and Specifying the Solar Array and/or Wind Turbine
  • 4. Sizing the controller
  • 5. Sizing the inverter
  • 6. Specifying the System Cable

When designing any off-grid system there are a lot of factors to take into consideration, such as module shading, orientation, frame mounting options, wiring etc.

Whatever process a designer takes it all boils down to a consideration of the drawbacks to designing a system. There are a lot of factors that affect any system but the main ones are:

  • a) Location - the site needs to be clear, open and free of shade.
  • b) Orientation - Solar arrays should be aligned to "true north" with proper inclination.
  • c) Frames - mounting options are many but should maximise solar efficiency and gain.
  • d) Solar Modules - these need to meet your system guidelines
  • e) Solar Controllers - sized to meet the needs of the system AND the user
  • f) Battery Storage - it is essential to size the batteries to the specific installation.
  • g) Loads - Can they be minimised as much as possible?
  • h) Wiring - What size cable is required and what effect does it have on the system performance?
